International Development
Newton and Engineers Without Borders - UK
The developing world faces many fundamental life or death challenges – 1,000,000,000 people still lack access to safe drinking water 820,000,000 people are under nourished 30,000 children die each day through poverty
At Newton, the majority of our people have travelled in gap-years or through volunteer placements and have personal experience of the life-threatening problems faced by huge numbers of people in developing countries. This understanding, and a realisation that our knowledge and skills can help make a long-term positive difference to the lives of the world’s most deprived communities led to our involvement with Engineers Without Borders (EWB)
EWB aims to aid the development of appropriate technology within communities around the world through its support with engineering projects and project management resource. One of the founding members, now a Trustee of EWB-UK, is a former Newton employee who recognised the contribution we could make and invited us to participate.
Our involvement supports EWB-UK overseas placements as well as a number of technical projects. We run half-day training courses at the pre-departure events arranged for all volunteers, assist operatives while they are in the field, and provide an onsite consultant to join each volunteer for two weeks during the
each project.
