From basic to specialty manufacture, the market is fast becoming a mature, least-cost-producer dominated marketplace where scale and cost base are keys to success. Overseas competition has led to much M&A activity in a bid to secure market share. Meanwhile smaller manufacturers focus on carving out niche markets.

Although the market can be segmented, there is a shared need across the industries to operate at the maximum possible efficiency to minimise unit cost, and maintain high service levels.
