Accurate, timely production data presented in a manner that is both clear to understand and easy to access is one of the cornerstones of a successful improvement project. Newton’s IT specialists combine many years of manufacturing experience with a wide variety of technical skills.
In general terms, our IT work falls into two categories:
Data capture
The data needed to drive improvement varies widely depending upon the industry, the process and the key performance measures. Data that we capture electronically includes:
- Speed / output data by linking to a PLC output or other counting device
- Batch cycle times
- Waste / giveaway by linking to check weighers
- Downtime entry on line by operators using touch screens
- Planning data, often extracted from existing IT systems
Data output
Given all the above data, Newton IT creates whatever output is necessary to help drive the improvement project forward. This would normally include a graphical display of performance, problem prioritisation and tracking on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
In addition, many organisations have special measures that they use to give an instant view of how well they are operating. These have included:
- Gantt charts of activities
- Graphs of yield or giveaway
- Tabular and graphical data of performance versus plan
- Production and labour scheduling tools
- Tracking of stock levels
Due to the bespoke nature of our IT work almost every client can gain substantial benefits. It can sit alongside an MRP system such as SAP or BAAN, replace a legacy system based on spreadsheets such as Excel, or start from scratch to automate a paper based system.
