NHS Trust Saves £750,000 p.a. by increasing theatre performance
Background
Newton has successfully completed a project with an NHS Trust, demonstrating that our methodology can successfully be applied to increasing the throughput of operating theatres.
Project
The outpatient department bottlenecks and constraints were identified. Improvements were made by making small changes to staff deployment, pre-preparation for patients, timing of validation letters and the booking process. In the theatres, new planning and reporting tools were adopted for daily use, which have helped all staff, including nurses, waiting list co-ordinators, administration staff, surgeons and clinicians.
Improvements were made in areas such as managing the patients and their test results, and setting total cost of investment dates.
Results
- Output efficiency increased by 50%
- Theatre throughput increased by 7.5% over a 6 month period saving £750,000 p.a.
