Finance Operations Controller

The details

The finance function in Newton sits at the heart of the business, not only controlling and reporting financial performance as custodians of a £85m turnover/£25m profit business, but also constantly evolving and adapting to the business’ rapid year on year growth.

Our operating model has two main components; Finance Operations and Commercial Finance - each team has its own senior manager, reporting to our Finance Director. We are looking for an experienced finance manager/controller to lead the Finance Operations team.

The Finance Operations team is responsible for all elements of the business’ core finance and accounting function, from GL maintenance, transactional processing, management reporting, cash management and forecasting, payroll, compliance, taxes, and statutory audit. As Finance Operations Controller you will be responsible for the operation and performance of the processes that underpin these functional areas which will require you to develop a deep understanding of them and the systems that they rely on.

From the experiences in your career to date you will have a view of what good finance processes look like. A key part of this role is developing a vision of what excellent looks like and working with the team to realise it. This will require staying abreast of developments in finance and accounting as well as developments in the business, and understanding how we can use technology to give the best support and service to our stakeholders as well as ensuring that our finance systems and processes can scale as the business continues to grow.

Currently, there are 4 permanent members in the team, 3 qualified accountants and a further trainee accountant, plus an occasional graduate on rotation placement. This is forecast to grow with the addition of trainee management accountant at the end of the summer. Leading this team is an important element of the role and you will be responsible for managing and inspiring this group as well as supporting their development.

You will interface with all our other support functions (90+ employees) along with our 250+ field-based consulting body. We have a vibrant culture in our head office, within which you will be expected to play an important part commensurate with your level of seniority.

Newton is a demanding, yet highly rewarding, environment within which to work. You will require a positive attitude and high levels of personal drive to succeed here as part of an exceptional and dynamic group of peers.

Strong team management experience is essential. We’re looking for someone to lead, challenge and inspire our highly-qualified team and play a leadership role in the wider head office.

You take pride in the high service level that you and your team provide to stakeholders, while always striving to improve it. You align this with good communication skills which will allow you to develop important relationships around Newton.

You will have a passion for “things being right”, be adaptable and have a genuine interest in IT/GL systems and associated transaction accuracy.

You will be highly numerate and possess strong technical accounting skills - being ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualified with first time passes and several years’ experience managing part or all of a high-performing finance function.

You will be a confident communicator, and comfortable using a range of channels as appropriate, including presentations to large groups of people when required.

Strong IT skills are essential, in particular advanced Excel, and some level of competency in Access, SQL, PowerBI or equivalent is also desirable.

Newton’s culture is prefaced on maximising the potential of our people, whether in client-based consulting roles, or in head office functions. This starts from day one. Throughout your time at Newton you’ll get support from many sources. You’ll attend our residential ‘Head Office Induction’ and, as well as your Line Manager, you will have a dedicated and consistent Development Manager to support you in your role. You’ll receive regular appraisals and annual pay reviews. Newton will reimburse institute membership fees and support personal development in areas such as CPD.

We offer a highly competitive salary and our generous benefits package includes profit sharing bonus, life assurance, income protection, pension contributions and 30 days holiday.

Joining us also brings many social benefits! We have a full social calendar with Autumn and Spring activity days, Christmas events, 3-day Summer event and 5 Newton-sponsored weekends a year including our annual ski trip.
